Hurdles ahead for US health reform Newsletter - October 17, 2009

“It is deplorable that Republicans are being so obstructive. They complain the bill’s good points will be ground down before it passes. If so, the time to object would be when that happens. Meanwhile, their intransigence has increased the risk that the bill will get worse not better, if it passes at all.” Financial Times Editorial

Financial Times Editorial Comment: Hurdles ahead for US health reform. Copyright The Financial Times Limited 2009. Published: October 14 2009 22:02 | Last updated: October 14 2009 22:02. The Senate finance committee, a crucial player in US healthcare reform, at last voted through its bill on the subject this week. It is likely to form the core of any eventual law. Barack Obama called the committee’s vote a milestone, but cautioned that “we’re not there yet”. He was right on both counts. In spite of the many compromises already struck, and the countless (often needless) complications already introduced, the bill is indeed a bold and comprehensive measure. After months of to and fro, one should recognise that fact. http://newsletter91507.blogspot.com/2009/10/financial-times-editorial-comment.html

Washington Post Editorial: The Unemployed Wait. Copyright by The Washington Post. Published: October 16, 2009. More than a million jobless Americans are in danger of losing benefits by the end of the year unless Congress passes an extension of unemployment insurance. The House has acted, but the Senate, which has a better bill, has been bogged down by obstruction from Republicans. In these extraordinarily hard times, Congress should extend this vital safety net without further delay. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/17/opinion/17sat2.html?th&emc=th

It will be business as usual for Goldman Sachs on Thursday morning. The bank will annoy a lot of people. Goldman, the institution that came through last year’s financial crisis best – arguably the only pure investment bank left standing – will say how much money it made in the third quarter (a lot) and how many billions it has stored for bonuses (about $5.5bn towards a likely 2009 bonus pool of $23bn). http://newsletter91507.blogspot.com/2009/10/goldman-earns-3.html

It has come to my attention that you can only read 2 articles per month at the Financial Times if you haven't registered. If you would like to read more of the articles for free, simply sign up for the free account and you can read 10 articles per month. That should be enough. I'll try to keep the FT links to a minimum. - I used a link that will open the Financial Times articles this week. CTM

Ps. If you would like to subscribe to this newsletter, just go to my website: www.carlostmock.com and go the the subscription link. It will appear in your email every week.
