April 19, 2010: These F@#king Guys - Goldman Sachs http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-april-19-2010/these-f--king-guys---goldman-sachs

“Last month Democrats on the Senate banking committee passed a reasonably tough financial regulatory reform bill. Now Republican leaders have suddenly begun lashing out against it. Did they belatedly discover some problem? No. They suddenly realized that their bet that reform would be watered down as it moved along might not pan out. Their battle cry of “no more bailouts” is disingenuous. They are not worried that reform will make bankers’ lives too easy, they are worried that it will make them too hard.” New York Times Editorial

Until this week, the Republican party hoped it could turn Barack Obama’s financial regulatory reforms into another healthcare saga. By defeating a signature White House effort, the Republicans would thereby damage Mr Obama. Somewhat belatedly, the Republicans have awoken to the fact that healthcare arguably ended up being their “Waterloo”, in the words of David Frum, a former speechwriter for George W. Bush, rather than that of Mr Obama, who managed last month to scrape the healthcare bill through the House of Representatives by three votes. http://newsletter91507.blogspot.com/2010/04/reality-dawns-for-republicans-over-wall.html

“Appoint a Corporation to the Supreme Court: Since the Supreme Court decided the corporations were people maybe Obama should appoint a corporation to the Supreme Court to replace retiring justice John Paul Stevens. Obama to Nominate Jesus Christ to Supreme Court. Author Unkown . Copyright Reader Support News. 17 April 2010. This article was originally credited to Rick Chertoff, who we have since found is not the author. We apologize for the error. President Barack Obama is expected to nominate Jesus Christ, an immigrant originally born to a virgin mother in Bethlehem, to fill the new vacancy on the Supreme Court. Although Mr. Christ is over 2,000 years old, He is immortal, so Democrats and Republicans expect that He will serve on the high court forever or until He decides to start the End Times. Republicans are expected to fight the nomination on the grounds that Mr. Christ would radically move the Court to the left. The GOP is also concerned that, despite decades of controversy and speculation, Mr. Christ has never revealed his position on abortion. Mr. Christ, according to many authorities, is expected to oppose the death penalty in all forms. Michael Steele, the head of the GOP national committee, issued a statement: "Christ is a complete mystery to us. He won't reveal His physical appearance and many of His positions are unknown or the subject of speculation. He is a stealth candidate. Why won't He reveal himself? Who does He think He is?" http://readersupportednews.org/opinion/196-supreme-court/1513-obama-to-nominate-jesus-christ-to-supreme-court

“The tax cuts were unaffordable when passed; that has become clearer in retrospect. President Obama has proposed making most of the cuts permanent, at a 10-year cost of $2.5 trillion. However, he would let those for the wealthiest 2 percent of households expire, raising $680 billion in the next decade. Under Mr. Obama's plan, the top marginal tax rates would return to the Clinton-era levels of 36 percent and 39.6 percent, up from 33 and 35 percent. Capital gains rates for the wealthiest taxpayers, now 15 percent, would rise to 20 percent. Economic performance during the 1990s suggests that these are not crippling burdens.” Washington Post Editorial

Our $48 Billion Credit Card Bill By ALBERT A. FOER. Copyright by The New York Times. Published: April 20, 2010. THESE days, it’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t use credit and debit cards regularly — they’re convenient and compact and often come with small cash-back incentives. But what almost no one realizes is that those benefits are far outweighed by an implicit transaction fee, set by credit card companies and their issuing banks, that costs consumers more than $48 billion a year. As Congress works toward passing consumer financial reform legislation, it should include new rules about how — and how much — credit card companies can charge. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/21/opinion/21foer.html?th&emc=th

Immigration

“The Arizona Legislature has just stepped off the deep end of the immigration debate, passing a harsh and mean-spirited bill that would do little to stop illegal immigration. What it would do is lead to more racial profiling, hobble local law enforcement, and open government agencies to frivolous, politically driven lawsuits. The bill is a grab bag of measures to enlist law enforcement and government at every level to expose and expel the undocumented. Opponents say it verges on a police state, which sounds overblown until you read it.” New York Times Editorial

A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines. United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3,500) during a flight. Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for damages caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar. During his final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was left with no choice other than to create a music video for YouTube exposing their lack of cooperation. The manager responded: "Good luck with that one, pal". So he posted a retaliatory video on YouTube. The video has since received over 7 million hits. United Airlines contacted the musician and attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video. Naturally his response was: "Good luck with that one, pal". Taylor Guitars sent the musician 2 new custom guitars in appreciation for the product recognition from the video that has led to a sharp increase in orders. A Text Message for Republicans... http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=108356952517874&ref=mf Editor’s note – X rated language

GOP Sen. Tom Coburn scored a perfect 100 on the American Conservative Union's rankings for lawmakers last year. That makes him one of the last people you'd expect to criticize what liberals see as the GOP's most notable media mouthpiece, Fox News, but that's exactly what he did at a recent town-hall meeting in Oklahoma. When an audience member fretted about going to prison for not buying health insurance, Coburn responded, "The intention is not to put anyone in jail. That makes for good TV on Fox, but that isn't the intention." When discussing disagreements with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, he described her as a " nice lady" and warned the jeering crowd to be civil and to get their news from more than one source: "Don't catch yourself being biased by Fox News that somebody is no good." The first would be the legacy issues left from his predecessor, like Iraq, Afghanistan and America’s image in the world. The second would be his own agenda for the future. After 15 months addressing the vexing matters he inherited, Mr. Obama is now aggressively advancing his own vision of foreign policy and defining himself more clearly on the world stage. The 47-nation conference on nuclear security he wrapped up on Tuesday represented a chance to assert proactive leadership rather than simply showing that he is not George W. Bush.” PETER BAKER

Washington Post Editorial: A summit goal: Making plutonium and uranium harder to get. Copyright by The Washington Post. Wednesday, April 14, 2010. PRESIDENT OBAMA was right to focus the 47-nation summit he convened this week in Washington on the challenge of securing nuclear materials. More than the strategic nuclear weapons of Russia, the thousands of tons of uranium and plutonium held by dozens of countries around the world pose a critical threat to the United States -- because, as has been established beyond question, al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups are seeking to buy or steal the small amount of that material needed for a bomb. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/13/AR2010041304018.html

FINANCIAL regulatory reform is necessary, complex -- and easily demagogued. Thus, although Republicans and Democrats in the Senate did, for a time, engage in negotiations, the odds never favored calm, bipartisan lawmaking. Add massive lobbying and a polarized pre-election political climate, and what you get is the populist posturing of the past week. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) denounced a bill backed by the Obama administration, saying it "institutionalizes" taxpayer-funded bailouts. The bill's author, Banking Committee Chairman Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.), called the GOP line a Wall Street-inspired "falsehood." Washington Post Editorial

The Fire Next Time By PAUL KRUGMAN. Copyright by The New York Times. Published: April 15, 2010. On Tuesday, Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, called for the abolition of municipal fire departments. Firefighters, he declared, “won’t solve the problems that led to recent fires. They will make them worse.” The existence of fire departments, he went on, “not only allows for taxpayer-funded bailouts of burning buildings; it institutionalizes them.” He concluded, “The way to solve this problem is to let the people who make the mistakes that lead to fires pay for them. We won’t solve this problem until the biggest buildings are allowed to burn.” O.K., I fibbed a bit. Mr. McConnell said almost everything I attributed to him, but he was talking about financial reform, not fire reform. In particular, he was objecting not to the existence of fire departments, but to legislation that would give the government the power to seize and restructure failing financial institutions. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/16/opinion/16krugman.html?th&emc=th

Europe Finds Clean Energy in Trash, but U.S. Lags By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL. Copyright by The New York Times. Published: April 12, 2010. The lawyers and engineers who dwell in an elegant enclave here are at peace with the hulking neighbor just over the back fence: a vast energy plant that burns thousands of tons of household garbage and industrial waste, round the clock. Far cleaner than conventional incinerators, this new type of plant converts local trash into heat and electricity. Dozens of filters catch pollutants, from mercury to dioxin, that would have emerged from its smokestack only a decade ago. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/13/science/earth/13trash.html?th&emc=th

“For a time I was puzzled by Pope Benedict’s response to the crisis in the Catholic church. We might disagree about the course of Catholicism. In uncharitable moments, I might mutter that the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was politician as much as priest; his piety merged with ambition some time ago. Yet the Pope indisputably was highly intelligent. Surely he could see what was happening. Now, I think I understand. The pontiff is a globaliser. He can feel the world’s geopolitical plates shifting. He grasps as well as any politician or business leader that the west has had its day. The opportunities to spread the gospel lie elsewhere – in societies more respectful of authority and less questioning of past crimes.” Philip Stephens

Worlds Without Women By MAUREEN DOWD. Copyright by The New York Times. No boys, no molestation. Or, in churchly language, no occasion of sin. Problem solved! Plus, the good father would spend his life warding off female cooties. Saying No to No! Washington Post Editorial: Financial reform is in the GOP's interest, too. Copyright by The Washington Post. Wednesday, April 7, 2010.... Politically, the White House may well be correct. President Obama and congressional Democrats can afford to play hardball: If they get a bill that reflects mainly their ideas, they win; if the Republicans kill it with a filibuster, Democrats win anyway. This only makes the Republican leadership's apparent strategy that much more puzzling. By all means, the GOP should leverage its 41 Senate votes to obtain reasonable concessions on genuine issues. But it should not play the politics of no. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/06/AR2010040603738.html
