June 8, 2010: Ass Quest 2010 http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-june-8-2010/ass-quest-2010

“Not long ago, Barack Obama was pilloried for being too activist, too meddlesome and too inclined to see himself as the messiah. He was forcing health care reform down our throats, running General Motors, wrecking the financial system and promising to make the oceans recede. But that was a different guy, from a parallel universe. The President Obama we all know is a passive, detached do-nothing. Or so we have been hearing since the BP oil spill gained our attention. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a Republican who once denounced Democrats for scheming to "increase dependence on government," now demands that Washington do more for his state. Former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who recently urged Congress to zero out the Environmental Protection Agency, challenges the administration to "save the Louisiana coast, save the fisheries, save the wetlands." Funny how nobody said that at the 2008 Republican National Convention, where the chant was "drill, baby, drill." Back then, real men didn't protect sea turtles. "For 35 days, he hasn't used the full force of our government," Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., complained of the president last month. That's right: A conservative lamenting that Obama is being too cautious and prudent in his deployment of federal power. What's next? Griping that he's not enough of a socialist?” Steve Chapman

The Times reported on Friday that investors and politicians in Britain are increasingly upset at America’s criticisms of BP. This isn’t an issue of American pique or British patriotism. Americans are rightly angry at BP’s inability to stop a disastrous leak for which it was wholly unprepared and its failure to tell the truth about the extent of the damage. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/12/opinion/12sat2.html?ref=global

“The assault by Israeli commandos on the Gaza aid flotilla in international waters was the work of a government that has lost sight of the national interest. “At an emotional hearing in the West Virginia hills where 29 miners died in April, mine workers dared to tell lawmakers the truth. One miner said that any employee who publicly complained about lethal hazards was soon a “marked man” and risked being fired. Others described slipshod safety routines, weak regulations and regulators more interested in protecting management’s profits than the lives of miners. This isn’t the first time these harsh truths have been spoken — only to have mine owners quickly return to business as usual. Senator Jay Rockefeller has vowed that things will be different. Rather than wait months for the formal investigation of the Upper Big Branch explosion to play out, the West Virginia Democrat is appealing to President Obama for sensible immediate fixes.” New York Times Editorial

“It's hard to imagine the State of Illinois' nearly $13 billion budget crisis getting any worse than it is. But that's exactly what could happen if Congress does not pass a six-month extension of the increased Medicaid funding provided by the federal stimulus package. Last year, the federal government increased the rate at which it reimbursed states for providing Medicaid. In Illinois, the fed's share of Medicaid funding rose to 62 percent, from 50 percent. That extra funding will cease at the end of this year, unless Congress votes to extend it.” Chicago Sun Times Editorial

Jason Plummer, the 27-year-old Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, has refused to release his tax returns for voters to see. Plummer's family owns the R.P. Lumber chain headquartered in Edwardsville and other businesses and partnerships. Plummer calls the controversy over his returns a distraction from more serious issues. "I don't think a person's economic status, their financial status, should be a standard for whether or not they run for office," he said. He can think whatever he wishes, but the distraction will dog him throughout the campaign. Bill Brady, the GOP candidate for governor, initially refused to release his returns, then relented and gave reporters a limited window to peruse six years of filings. They revealed that Brady paid no federal income taxes the last two years because of business losses. So Plummer wants voters to trust him — on his terms. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/ct-edit-taxes-20100604,0,6499515.story

Health Care

“The group concludes that health professionals who facilitated these practices were in essence conducting research and experimentation on human subjects. The main purposes of such research, the group says, were to determine how to use various techniques, to calibrate the levels of pain and to create a legal basis for defending interrogators from potential prosecution under antitorture laws. The interrogators could claim that they had acted in good faith in accord with medical judgments of safety and had not intended to inflict extreme suffering. The report from the physicians’ group does not prove its case beyond doubt — how could it when so much is still hidden? — but it rightly calls on the White House and Congress to investigate the potentially illegal human experimentation and whether those who authorized or conducted it should be punished. Those are just two of the many unresolved issues from the Bush administration that President Obama and Congressional leaders have swept under the carpet.” New York Times Editorial

Health Care Reform

“The United States spends much more on health care than countries with similar kinds of economies. So costs are sure to be examined closely as federal officials shape regulations under the new health care law. Americans have abundant access to high-tech diagnostic tools like CT and M.R.I. scanners, and to life-saving surgical procedures like angioplasties. Yet Americans don’t see doctors more often or live longer, healthier lives, according to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. And Americans’ cancer survival rates are not markedly better. In fact, the population of the United States has about the same prevalence of disease as that of other developed countries.” The New York Times

New York Times Editorial: The Doctor Payment Follies. Copyright by The New York Times. Published: June 4, 2010. The formula that is used to pay doctors who treat Medicare patients is producing increasingly absurd results. If it were to be followed this year, doctors would face a 21 percent cut in payments for the tests, procedures, office visits and other services they provide to elderly Americans. That would be a disaster, driving many doctors to stop accepting Medicare patients. Luckily, nobody is seriously contemplating that. As it has done repeatedly in recent years, Congress is readying a short-term fix that would provide a modest increase in physician fees for the next 19 months. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/06/opinion/06sun1.html?th&emc=th

“ON THE SUBJECT of campaign finance regulation, the Supreme Court is out of control. The latest manifestation is the court's unwarranted intervention in Arizona's upcoming election. For more than a decade, elections for state office in Arizona have been conducted under a voluntary system of public financing. Among other provisions, participating candidates receive additional public funds if their wealthy or otherwise well-funded opponents choose not to take part in the system and choose to spend more than a specified amount. Some would-be big spenders challenged the law, claiming that the extra public funds violated their free-speech rights. In advance of deciding whether to hear that case, the justices took the extraordinary -- and extraordinarily unwise -- step of issuing an emergency order to block the state from dispensing the extra funds.” Washington Post Editorial

Jan Brewer, can no longer receive public funds they had counted on to run against a free-spending wealthy opponent. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/09/opinion/09wed1.html?th&emc=th
