“Immigration policy has taken a populist turn in the US for the same reason it has done so elsewhere: because politicians have tried to intimidate the public out of even reasonable discussion of immigration. The political dynamics that made Arizonans deem a new law necessary were not much different from those that led the Swiss to vote for a ban on minarets last autumn. The episode in Rochdale, England on Wednesday, in which UK prime minister Gordon Brown referred privately to the widow Gillian Duffy as a “bigoted woman” for raising questions about immigration, was front-page news across the US. That is because Mr Brown mirrored American politicians’ views of when it is proper for the public to talk about immigration and what it is permissible to say. The answers, apparently, are “never” and ‘nothing’.” Christopher Caldwell

Immigration Issue Poses a Complex Test for 2 Parties By ADAM NAGOURNEY. Copyright by The New York Times. Published: April 27, 2010. Senator John McCain of Arizona took to the Senate floor the other day to embrace a tough new Arizona law giving the police the authority to detain people they suspect are illegal immigrants. Washington Post Editorial: Europe's way out of debt crisis is through political change. Copyright by the Washington Post . Thursday, April 29, 2010... A strong currency, the euro was supposed to provide an incentive for these countries to improve competitiveness and maintain high fiscal standards. But to varying degrees, they spent the windfall instead. The inevitable debt crisis is now at hand; having begun in Greece, it may be spreading to Spain, whose sovereign debt Standard & Poor's downgraded yesterday. In pre-euro times, Greece, Spain, Portugal and others would have coped by devaluing their national currencies and boosting exports. Today, brutal austerity is their only choice. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/28/AR2010042805356.html
The Euro Trap By PAUL KRUGMAN. Copyright by The New York Times. Published: April 29, 2010... What’s the nature of the trap? During the years of easy money, wages and prices in the crisis countries rose much faster than in the rest of Europe. Now that the money is no longer rolling in, those countries need to get costs back in line. But that’s a much harder thing to do now than it was when each European nation had its own currency. Back then, costs could be brought in line by adjusting exchange rates — e.g., Greece could cut its wages relative to German wages simply by reducing the value of the drachma in terms of Deutsche marks. Now that Greece and Germany share the same currency, however, the only way to reduce Greek relative costs is through some combination of German inflation and Greek deflation. And since Germany won’t accept inflation, deflation it is. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/30/opinion/30krugman.html?ref=opinion

Israel’s alarm at the deterioration in its relations with the US is palpable. In Jerusalem recently, even a liberal commentator told me: “Barack Obama is a disaster for Israel. I don’t think the general public realise just how much of a disaster he is.” Government officials are more careful – but only a bit. New York Times Editorial: Dangerous Games. Copyright by The New York Times. Published: April 28, 2010. By nearly all independent accounts, Iraq’s parliamentary elections last month were reasonably free and fair. Efforts now to manipulate the process — especially but not solely by Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki — are an insult to Iraqi voters. They are also dangerous. The longer it takes to form a new government, and the more questions raised about the process, the easier it will be for extremists to exploit the uncertainty. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/29/opinion/29thurs1.html?th&emc=th

“There are two tragic anniversaries this month. It is 11 years since two Colorado students gunned down 12 of their fellow classmates and one teacher at Columbine High School and three years since 32 students and faculty members were gunned down at Virginia Tech. Those horrors haven’t slowed the gun lobby’s relentless push to weaken the nation’s already far too weak gun laws — or Congress’s eagerness to do the gun lobby’s bidding. Last week, House Democrats had to pull back legislation that would have finally given the District of Columbia a voting representative in Congress because of amendments tacked on to the bill that would have gutted local gun laws. The only bright spot in all of this is that gun victims’ families and Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan group co-led by Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City, are fighting back. They have begun a campaign to get Congress to close the loophole that has allowed criminals, troubled teens and the mentally ill to evade federal background checks and purchase weapons from unlicensed private dealers at weekend gun shows.” New York Times Editorial

The reporters had to travel to Brady's Springfield campaign office and couldn't make copies of the tax documents. Republicans Allow Debate on Financial Overhaul. By DAVID M. HERSZENHORN and EDWARD WYATT. Copyright by The New York Times. Published: April 28, 2010. With political pressure mounting, Senate Republicans relented on Wednesday and agreed to let Democrats open debate on legislation that would impose the most far-reaching overhaul of the nation’s financial regulatory system since the aftermath of the Depression. The decision by Republicans to allow floor deliberations came after they voted three days in a row to block the bill, and it suggested that they saw political peril in being depicted as impeding tougher rules for Wall Street. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/29/business/29regulate.html?th&emc=th
Democrats Tweak Bank Bill to Preclude Bailouts By DAVID M. HERSZENHORN. Copyright by The New York Times. Published: April 29, 2010. “President Obama has ordered a freeze on new offshore drilling leases as well as a “thorough review” into what is almost sure to be the worst oil spill in this country’s history — exceeding in size and environmental damage the calamitous Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989. There are many avenues to pursue. Here are two: the oil company’s response, and Mr. Obama’s. The company, BP, seems to have been slow to ask for help, and, on Friday, both federal and state officials accused it of not moving aggressively or swiftly enough. Yet the administration should not have waited, and should have intervened much more quickly on its own initiative.” New York Times Editorial

Washington Post Editorial: Climate change bill shouldn't fall victim to immigration reform. Copyright by The Washington Post. Tuesday, April 27, 2010. IS THE Senate climate bill doomed? It certainly took a hit Saturday, when Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), hitherto the bill's lone Republican backer, threatened to abandon the effort. Mr. Graham, who had worked with Sens. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) for months on the bill, derided Democratic leaders for opening the way to take up immigration reform before the climate bill, calling the move "a cynical political ploy" and claiming that it endangered the climate effort. He has a point. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/26/AR2010042603702.html

“A TOP Vatican official said The Times “lacks fairness in its coverage of Pope Benedict.” The archbishop of Brooklyn urged parishioners to “besiege” the paper and send a message that the Catholic Church will no longer be its “personal punching bag.” Writers in The Wall Street Journal and other publications have assailed the paper. “Falsehood upon falsehood,” the Rev. Raymond J. de Souza, a priest and professor at Queen’s University in Ontario, wrote in Canada’s National Post. Hundreds of people have written to me. “I am outraged each time The Times intentionally disparages the Catholic Church, its pope and its bishops,” said Richard Kelly of Pittsburgh. Edwina and Gene Cosgriff of Staten Island wrote that The Times was guilty of “a yellow journalism hatchet job on a holy, venerable, outstanding religious leader.” Hardly alone among the world’s news media, The Times has been covering the widening Catholic sexual-abuse scandal, which in recent months has expanded even to the German archdiocese of the future Pope Benedict XVI. But one Times article last month struck a particularly sensitive nerve. Relying on documents from a lawsuit, it described how local church officials and the Vatican handled the case of a Milwaukee priest who may have molested as many as 200 deaf boys.” CLARK HOYT

“Healthy, supportive same-sex relationships abound in Illinois, and they deserve the same civil rights the rest of us enjoy -- the right to visit a loved one in the hospital, to be granted custody of children, to inherit property. But Mell and Baker, of course, can't marry in Illinois. They plan to marry in Iowa, one of five states plus the District of Columbia that allow for same-sex marriages. This page has long supported gay marriage as the only fair and just option for Illinois residents, but state legislators are not ready. There is not enough support for its passage.” Chicago Sun Times Editorial
