“The future Pope Benedict XVI was kept more closely apprised of a sexual abuse case in Germany than previous church statements have suggested, raising fresh questions about his handling of a scandal unfolding under his direct supervision before he rose to the top of the church’s hierarchy. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future pope and archbishop in Munich at the time, was copied on a memo that informed him that a priest, whom he had approved sending to therapy in 1980 to overcome pedophilia, would be returned to pastoral work within days of beginning psychiatric treatment. The priest was later convicted of molesting boys in another parish.” NICHOLAS KULISH and KATRIN BENNHOLD

“Pope Benedict XVI’s latest apology for the emerging global scandal of child abuse by predatory priests — an issue that the Roman Catholic Church should have engaged years ago — is strong on forgiveness but far short of the full accountability that Catholics need for repairing their damaged church. With the scandal spreading across Europe, Benedict apologized to Irish Catholics last week for the “sinful and criminal” sexual abuse of thousands of children across decades. But he made no mention of the need to discipline diocesan leaders most responsible for shielding hundreds of priests from criminal penalties by moving them from parish to parish to continue their crimes.’ New York Times Editorial

Doctrine Preoccupied Benedict as Archbishop By KATRIN BENNHOLD and NICHOLAS KULISH. Copyright by The New York Times. Published: March 27, 2010. When Pope Benedict XVI was archbishop of Munich and Freising, he was broadly described as a theologian more concerned with doctrinal debates than personnel matters. That, say his defenders, helps explain why he did not keep close tabs on a pedophile priest sent to his archdiocese in 1980 and allowed to work in a parish. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/28/world/europe/28church.html?hp

To Sinead O'Connor, Pope Benedict's apology for church sex abuse rings hollow By Sinead O'Connor. Copyright by The Washington Post. Sunday, March 28, 2010. When I was a child, Ireland was a Catholic theocracy. If a bishop came walking down the street, people would move to make a path for him. If a bishop attended a national sporting event, the team would kneel to kiss his ring. If someone made a mistake, instead of saying, "Nobody's perfect," we said, "Ah sure, it could happen to a bishop." The expression was more accurate than we knew. This month, Pope Benedict XVI wrote a pastoral letter of apology -- of sorts -- to Ireland to atone for decades of sexual abuse of minors by priests whom those children were supposed to trust. To many people in my homeland, the pope's letter is an insult not only to our intelligence, but to our faith and to our country. To understand why, one must realize that we Irish endured a brutal brand of Catholicism that revolved around the humiliation of children. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/25/AR2010032502363.html?hpid=artslot

“IT'S NOT often that a major multinational corporation sacrifices profits and the possibility of substantial growth for a human rights principle. So Google deserves praise for its groundbreaking decision to move its China-based search engine from the mainland to Hong Kong and end its censorship of searches. The shift does not mean that Chinese will be able to learn about Tiananmen or Tibet through Google searches; Beijing's firewall has already begun screening such content from Google.cn. But the company itself will no longer be engaged in suppressing Internet freedom on behalf of an authoritarian government. In drawing that line, Google sets an example that other U.S. firms should follow -- and that the Obama administration should defend.” Washington Post Editorial

Health Care

“Providing free or discounted medical care to low-income uninsured people is supposed to be the reason nonprofit hospitals get generous tax breaks, while for-profit hospitals don't. Some Chicago area hospitals, though, are not doing nearly enough to justify their tax-exempt status. In 2008, according to state records, more than a dozen non-profit hospitals here spent less than 1 percent of their total revenue on charity care for the poor.” Chicago Sun-Times Editorial

Health Care Reform

“We are in this together. That's the spirit that moved President Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and every Democrat who voted "yes" in the House Sunday for the historic bill that will soon make health care affordable for almost every American. We know that sounds insufferably schmaltzy to many, with its echoes of soft-headed dreamers singing "Kumbaya." But that has always been the matter at the heart of this centurylong national debate over health care: how much do we give a damn about each other.” Chicago Sun-Times Editorial

GOP Bashing

WE DISAGREE with the charge made by Rep. Cantor today that Democrats are using acts of violence for political gain," Brad Woodhouse, spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, said Thursday. He was referring to Rep. Eric Cantor (Va.), a Republican leader in the House, who said that Democratic leaders are taking political advantage of reports of vandalism and death threats against Democrats who voted for the health-reform bill. Democrats who blame the rhetoric of GOP leaders for such acts, Mr. Cantor said, are "dangerously fanning the flames." Washington Post Editorial
